Open Space Series - The Walker House

Interior Architecture Photography

In collaboration with Open Space Series, I photographed the Walker House in Silver Lake, Los Angeles, a residence R.M. Schindler designed between 1935 and 1936. The house is built into a steep hillside and descends the slope in three levels. Schindler was known for tailoring his designs to specific sites and clients, and you can really see that here.

What drew me to this project was how Schindler worked with the hillside instead of against it. The house steps down naturally with the terrain. I spent time watching how light moved through the clerestory windows throughout the day, highlighting the warm Oregon pine built-ins. Each room frames a different view of the reservoir below, and I found myself constantly drawn to these large windows, always looking through the interior space toward the landscape beyond.

One thing that stood out to me was Schindler's decision to paint the exterior in blue-green tones that pick up the colors of the sky and water. It's a subtle distinction, but it makes the whole building feel connected to its surroundings rather than just placed there. There's something about how he integrated color, light, and landscape that made this shoot particularly rewarding.
