Open Space Series - The Umbrella House

In collaboration with Open Space Series, I photographed the Umbrella House in Sarasota, Florida, a remarkable residence Paul Rudolph designed in 1953.
The house gets its name from the dramatic slatted wood canopy that extends over 3,000 square feet, sheltering the home, pool, and outdoor spaces beneath it. Rudolph designed this expansive structure to address Florida's intense sun while creating constantly shifting patterns of light and shadow throughout the day.
My approach focused on capturing the interplay between the umbrella's geometric patterns and the natural light filtering through, casting shifting lines of shadows throughout the day. Something that is present in a lot of my work is bold, directional light, so I felt like a kid in the sandbox with this project. This constant shifting creates an ever-changing visual experience. I was drawn to how Rudolph used this simple canopy structure to unite the entire property under one gesture, blurring the lines between covered and open space. This simple yet thoughtful design kept me thinking about it for months after the shoot.
